The aim of this study is to explore translatorship, which has been one of the oldest professions in the world and one of the professions that has not yet completed its professionalization process in Turkey. For this purpose, first of all, the concepts of translation and translatorship have been defined, later on, the situation of translatorship has been analyzed regarding the Turkish Language Association’s general profession definition. According to this definition, in order for a profession to be a professionalization, there has to be the standarts and ethic rules for the performance of the job, trade bodies and education and certification/credential and in this study the extent to which these criteria have been met for translatorship has been identified. It has been discussed that there have been developments with respect to standard and ethic rules, trade bodies and education, yet, no concrete attempts have been found out regarding certification or credentials in our country. In the last part of the article, some information about the content of two internationally credible translatorship exams which have been administered by the Chartered Institute of Linguists for a long time has been presented as a suggestion for the Turkish context.
