CULTURE UNIFIES: THE PROJECTS OF ESKIEHIR 2013 TURKIC WORLD CAPITAL OF CULTURE IN TERMS OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Capital of culture events which take part in event tourism as a kind of cultural tourism, are of increasing importance in terms of economic and cultural benefits for cities. An important benefit of capital of culture for cities is the contribution to the social development of local residents. Specific projects that implemented within the scope of capital of culture, contribute to social development of populations who can not always participate in cultural events for various obstacles or of groups like students, elderly and disabled people. Thereby capital of culture, help to reduce the distance in the society in terms of social development and realise the unifying and integrative society function of culture. The aim of the research is to evaluate the contribution of capital of culture to the social development of local residents by determining projects which oriented the social development of local residents within Eskiehir 2013 Turkic World Capital of Culture projects. In the study by using descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques, assessments and recommendations are provided about the projects aiming social development of local residents.
