The history of the cooperative banks in Cyprus has begun at the first years of the twentieth century by the British Colonial administration which aimed to inrease the tax incomes from the rural part of the island. From 1920 to 1960 cooperative credit companies had been devoloped in every village of the island as the main finanacial sources of the agriculture by the both peoples of the island. During 1960 thay had been divided between two main peoples of the island, because of the intercommunal conflict. After 1963 that improvement had stopped but that local banks could manage to survive till the end of the century at least in the Turkish part of the island as the main source of the agricultural finance.
