Author(s): Uğur Zeynep GÜVEN

Considering the diversity of social problems in Turkey, the issues concerning the family as an institution have been increasingly taking place in the social agenda. In this sense, this paper aims to question the attitudes towards women and the problems of domestic violence and child marriage from a sociological point of view, by evaluating the nationwide behaviors and attitudes towards marriage as a social institution, revealinga basis and a common reference point for debates on family in Turkey. Thus, this paper presents an overview on the findings of TAYA “Research on Family Structure in Turkey”, the most comprehensive scientific data on family and household structure in Turkey that took place in 2011, realized by The Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Hereby, the paper intends to shed lightonto the contemporary issues that are related directly or indirectly to the family as an institution and to family policies.
