COMPREHENSION OF THE COSMOS IN THE ANCIENT AGE: DIFFERENT COSMOS MODELS FROM ARISTOTLE TO COPERNICUS

Aristotle’s famous expression that “Men naturally desire knowledge.” is surely a guiding light of all kind of cognitive investigation. With reference to this motto, it can easily be recognized that human beings have a great ability for reasoning in order to produce science, philosophy, art, religion and similar activities while he was trying to understand and explicate his dwelling place called universe. As it is well-known, astronomical studies of Ancient epoch in the historical development process of mankind doubtlessly have a great importance for comprehension of nature of universe. Hereby particularly Eudoxus, Herakleides, Hipparkos, Aristarkhos ve Aristotle’s models of running of the universe and in the following years the theory developed by Ptolemaios will be examined. Because this process is provided a basis of Copernicus’s explanations which is expressing a revolutionary transformation by many scientist and thinker. Correspondingly in this study, we are going to analyse Ancient models for cosmos in the context of history of science.
