BESIM ATALAYS (1882-1965) THE MEANING OF QURAN NAMED GODS BOOK

Abstract

Author(s): Ahmet ÖZ

Besim Atalay had graduated from late Ottoman Madrasa and Istanbul University, Higher Teacher Education School. He was a scholar who knew Ottomans and early years of Republic very well. Atalay who knows Turkish and its various dialects as well as Arabic and Farsi. He worked Turkish Language Society as a member and president for ninety years and has written books on Turkish Grammar and Dialects of Turkish.

In the early years of Republic, when there were debates about Qur'an in Turkish and Prayers in Turkish, Atalay tried to translate the Qur'an into Turkish and upheld the idea of making Turkish the language of prayer. Moreover, he defended the opinion of Turkish being superior to other languages, with the effect of Sun Language Theory which emerged at his lifetime. While translating The Qur'an into Turkish, he sometimes did farfetched translations in order to provide more appropriate Turkish translation, eventually resulting in mistakable translations. In this study, we will evaluate the aforementioned work from the point of Turkish translation rules and we will put forward the idea of whether Turkish is the language of prayer in an Islamic juridical point of view.
