Abstract

Author(s): Abdulkadir EMEKSÄ°Z

Mâni, which is generally considered in the anonymous literature category, is one of the oldest poetry forms and genres specific to Turkish literature. “Ayakl? Mâni”s, which are included in the classifications of mâni, have found the opportunity to be performed in many different literary circles in Istanbul in terms of the socio-cultural texture on which their creators are based. The purpose of this article is to explain the contests of ayakl? mâni in Istanbul with human, time, place, music and social environment factors. The working material is largely based on the mâni texts emerged in the 19th century. One of the biggest differences that enable us to distinguish the “mâni”s of Istanbul from the general types is that there are examples with known narrators and writers. Knowing more or less the life stories, performance environments and place of the mâni tellers of Istanbul in the cultural life are the factors that provide a better understanding of the meaning of the mutually told genres. In the article, the musical coffee houses, which are the leading places for the contests of ayakl? mâni, the listeners who can be described as the supporters of the mâni tellers and their effects on the performance are given with the examples taken from the mâni contests.
