Abstract

Author(s): Bekir SAVAŞ

All films tell a kind of story. Aristotle says that the aim of the story is to teach and to give pleasure. Therefore, the films, which emerged as a type of entertainment in the end of the 20th century, have become an industry and have made significant contributions to the cultural repertoire of nations and shaped the masses of people in ideological, linguistic and cultural terms. For these reasons, films make significant contributions to the language, culture and worldview of the people when they are screened in their own countries and as foreign films in the countries where this art and industry is not very strong and developed. This contribution is no different from the contribution of translations of foreign literary works to local literature and culture. For this reason, in this research, it is aimed to find out whether subtitle applications in film translations can be a research subject within the scope of translation studies, and therefore firstly, the stages that the translation has gone through during history and the points translation has arrived in terms of theory and method are mentioned. Then, subtitle applications which are the subject of research are mentioned. Two additional studies have been conducted to show which methods are used in the subtitle translations of the TV serials. They have been conducted to show the methods of subtitles in film translations. Based on the data obtained from these additional studies, it was concluded that subtitle applications in film translations are interlingual translations as film translations for dubbing, but has its own features as well and ther efore, they should be handled within the framework of translation theory.
