Abstract

Author(s): Burhan BARAN

Third person singular / demonstrative pronoun in old Turkish received case suffixes as an. This type of inflection continued in the Old Oghuz Turkish period. In this period, the pronoun o / ol were used as an?, ana, anda, andan and anun with case suffixes. Among them, the words anda and andan in particular draw attention as they contain different meanings. While the words anda and andan are forms of the pronoun o / ol with location and ablative case suffixes, they can become pronoun when indicating person, object or location, and adverb when expressing time and cause or reason. Polysemic aspect of these two words can be seen in the texts written in the Old Oghuz Turkish. Texts written in this language use the word anda to refer to orada (in there), onda (therein), oraya (there), o zaman (then) and ona (thereto), and the word andan to mean ondan (therefrom), ona (thereto), sonra (after), ondan sonra (thereafter), ondan ötürü (therefore), oradan (wherefrom) and onunla (whereit). To highlight the polysemic aspect of the words anda and andan, this paper discussed the identified meanings of these words by analyzing certain works written in the Old Oghuz Turkis
