AN OBSERVATION ON CHARACTERISTICS OF ITALIAN SMS LANGUAGE

Humankind has utilised various communication methods and tools throughout the history. With development of new technologies, a service named SMS for short message sending via mobile phones has been initiated in 1990s. During the fast proliferation of SMS usage among large masses a phenomenon called "SMS language" has emerged. The SMS language that has shaped up with the aim of communicating via mobile phones with text messages has also reverberated in languages of multi formed "social media". With this regard SMS language is studied in multiple aspects. Reasons for usage of a newly emerged language, vastly different mechanisms than those of traditional language, differences occurring in various languages can be counted as some of them. In this study, with the context of Italian teaching as a foreign language, usage of Italian SMS language and the properties it poses are examined. History of SMS and its usage areas are discussed within the frame of topic.
