AN INDISPENSABLE PATTERN IN TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE DESIGN: PLAID (CHECK AND TARTAN)

People have been engaged in weaving since the early ages in order to meet the basic need for clothing. It has been determined from archaeological finds and written sources that have been unearthed as a result of excavations in almost every part of the society for thousands of years. Plaid pattern, formed by touching horizontal and vertical bands with at least two different colors, is a textile pattern known and applied all over the world. Plaid pattern first appeared in woven patterns, over time it was used in all textile design techniques and methods. Plaid patterns, not only in the fashion and textile industry, but also in many different industrial products ranging from decorative products to stationery, are a pattern form consisting of a combination of horizontal and vertical lines. It is possible to play with components such as narrow-wide in different colors and widths. Vivienne Westwood is almost a symbol of fashionistas like Alexander McQueen and Burberry. When the plaid patterns are examined today, we see the terms "Tartan", "Plaid" and "Check" in English, and these terms are used interchangeably. However, each of these iconic models is actually different. These classic patterns are some of the most recognizable and versatile textile design patterns in the world. Throughout history, they have been popular among cultures and continue to be icons in both fashion and interior design. In the study, the origin of the plaid pattern used and used in almost every part of the world, its history, the 3 types of plaid pattern, the definitions and properties of check, tartan, plaid patterns, the differences and similarities between these patterns, the place of plaid in traditional and contemporary textile art will be explained with examples.
