AN EXPERIMENT ON THE HABITUS OF THE CONCEPT: “KUTSAL”

Abstract

Author(s): Sıtkı KARADENİZ

Coined by Eliade to make a distinction between “Sacred and Profane”, the term, “kutsal”, is still widely used as a practice of “internalization” of his original idea that drives from an integrated formulation of “primitive” religious, Judaism and Christianity. This practice also normalizes Islamization of the phenomenon relying on Christianization of Roman dual distinction. It can also be observed that the usage of the word, “kutsal”, cast on other religions without any problematization emerges as a practice of universalization that absorbs, flattens and obscures some basic values. Therefore primitive “God”s, “God and Jesus” in Christianity (father and son) and “Allah” in Islam seems to flow in a stream to juxtapose around the same position. Eventually, distinctions between these characteristics of Gods start to disappear. Some quasi-different articles about the concept of “kutsal” in the field of theology can be read as proliferation of “one discourse”. This proliferation inevitably becomes “metastasis”. It can be suggested that “religious problematics” cannot be discussed without any usage of the word “kutsal” in the metastasis, which is understood as a loss of “meaning” and “existence”. However, the word of “kutsal” should be problematized and even suspended in order to enhance and open discussion without usage of the “word.”
