Today, the most significant impacts of neo-liberalism at the local level can be seen in the neighborhood. The “safe” traditional neighborhood is leaving its place to “gated communities”. Or sometimes neighborhoods turn into urban decay areas or scary places to which the city dwellers avoid to go. Urban segregation and fear of crime accompany this transformation and all these factors also transform the urban dwellers into individuals who are suspicious of each other and eventually ‘othering’ begins. Starting from this point, this study focuses on neo-liberalism’s impacts on city dwellers. Within this context, this study is based on a field research in Turkey, searching the impact of the new urbanization process which is named as the ‘city of neo-liberalism’. This study evaluates how this process form housing and lifestyle choices and what are its impacts on the risk perception of the dwellers regarding the transformation of the traditional neighborhood.
