A MINE BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT FOR ECONOMY OF TURKEY: PUMICE

Abstract

Author(s): Necmettin ELMASTAS

There are lots of mine types with economic value on earth. These are metallic and nonmetallic underground sources. The obsidian, perlite, ignimbrite and pumice are the main materials formed through volcanic activities. Among them, pumice is a volcanic mine with a glassy and porous structure which is formed by ejection of the gases inside the magma during sudden cooling. It has been detected that there are about 18 billion tons pumice deposits worldwide. Main countries in which pumice deposits are high are U.S.A, Turkey, and Italy. In Turkey pumice deposits are around 2,8 billion tons. Hence, pumice deposits in Turkey constitutes 15,8% of total world deposits. Pumice is produced in a few countries. The countries which make most of the production are Turkey and Italy. While Italy was the first in pumice production between 2000 and 2007, by increasing its production volume Turkey passed Italy and has become the first between 2008 and 2011. For example, while in 2010 Turkey’s share in total worldwide pumice share was 23% (4.000.000 Tons), that of Italy was 17%. Other countries which follow these two countries are Greece, Iran, Chile, and Saudi Arabia.
