Abstract

Author(s): Fikrettin YAVUZ

This study is aimed to discuss in all aspects an incident that caused a diplomatic crisis in the Ottoman-American relations. At this point, it is seen that various events which led to diplomatic tension between the Ottoman Empire and United States from the beginning of mid-19th century. Protestant missionaries in the Ottoman geography and the Ottoman citizens resisting against their activities were at the centre of these events. It is noteworthy that the events, in which generally wounded sometimes mortal attacks right along with the destruction of missionaries' properties were observed, caused serious tension in bilateral relations. In this context, the attack inflicted upon Miss Anna Melton, a Protestant missionary, near Mosul in 1893 turned into a crisis in the Ottoman-American relations. In this study, this case study will be discussed in detail and evaluated the attitude of Ottoman and American authorities to this event at the beginning of 1890's, the period the most tumultuous years of Abdulhamid II's reign.
