UNDERSTANDING RESIDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARD TOURISM IMPACTS: RESIDENTS’ PLACE IMAGE AND SUPPORT FOR TOURISM

The present study aims to investigate residents’ attitude toward tourism within the contexts of antecedents and results. In the scope of this study, impact of residents’ place image on their attitude toward tourism and the impact of their attitude toward tourism on their support for tourism were taken into consideration. The relevant study data was collected from residents in Marmaris County. In the period between July and September 2015, data was collected from 473 participants by means of a survey method. The hypothesis constructed on research model was analyzed through explanatory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. Based on the obtained findings, community services, social environment and physical opportunities were indicated as subdimensions by residents of Marmaris County, which constitute their local image. Whereas a positive effect was found between residents’ place image and their positive attitude toward impacts of tourism; a negative effect exists between residents’ place image and their negative attitude toward tourism. There were also an effect was found between residents’ positive attitude and support for tourism; a negative effect between residents’ negative attitude and support for tourism. Acquired findings were discussed in terms of their contribution into the literature and into practice.
