THE COLD DIPLOMACY ERA BETWEEN TURKEY AND AUSTRIA

Abstract

Author(s): Mustafa ÖZALP

Recently there has been a number of news about the relations between Turkey and Austria. The main theme of these news are mostly reciprocal, humiliating, insulting comments between Mevlut Cavusoglu, Minister of Turkish Republic Foreign Affairs and his counterpart Sebastian Kurz, Minister of Austrian Republic Foreign Affairs and the issues regarding the membership procedures of Turkish Republic into the European Union. Due to the reciprocal comments, the media creates an atmosphere as if there has been hostility among these governments and Turkey criticizes the Austrian government. Nowadays, the necessity of headscarf ban, which has been proposed by Minister Kurz, is severely discussed countrywide. The comments of Minister Kurz about this issue cause social discrimination. Austrian politicians are supposed to treat equally all people regardless of their religious beliefs, nationality, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. Otherwise, the migration policy would collapse and the relations between Turkey and Austria will suffer permanently. Austrian government does not have to provide privileges for Muslims living in Austria but Austrian government has to treat equally to Muslims as much as other people. This may help to end the cold diplomacy era between these two countries.
