Author(s): Mustafa YAKAR

Determination of the distribution of populations and demonstrating the reasons compose a research area in demographics. Various methods are applied to determine population dispersion in demographical research; some of these have a descriptive quality. In addition, with the development particularly in the field of Geographical Information Systems technologies, it is possible to analyze spatial distribution digitally. The aim of this research is to demonstrate these methods in the context of population distribution and apply them to the Afyonkarahisar province example. In addition to various mathematical and statistical analyses (Gini, Hoover, Theil indexes, Redistribution Index, Lorenz Curve for example) Spatial Statistical Analysis methods included in Geographical Information Systems have been demonstrated and implemented in this research work. As a result, indexes as well as other methods have been used to demonstrate the changes in the population distribution incurring in Afyonkarahisar province example particularly after 1970 to determine the quantitative changes linked to urbanization and migration processes.
