COPERNICUS, ALI KUŞÇU AND MEVLEVI SAMA

Abstract

Author(s): Sefa DEREKÖY

The time of Andalusian Muslims’ left from Iberian peninsula and the time of the beginning of the Reform movements interestingly coincide with the time period of Copernicus’s explanation of his Universe Theory. This new Universe Theory has appeared suddenly in Astronomy historiography in a way never seen before. What the source of this theory based on has been a great interest for the researchers for a long time. Spain and Ottoman Empires were the greatest political authorities in the sixteenth centuries. Along with the Moriscos, remebrance of Andalusia and the European Reformists, Ottoman Empire was in war against Spain. The possibility that Ottoman used the discoveries of the great astronomers such as Tusi, ?bn el-?atr and Ali Ku?çu against Spain which was the fortress of the Latin Christianity and the defender of the belief, “The center of the Universe was the Earth” inherited from Ptolemy, seems logical. Mevlevi Sama developed in correlation with these new knowledge discovered by these Muslim astronomers. Besides Mevlevi Sama is like an evidence of that Universe Theory of Copernicus has been known in the land of Ottoman and Middle East world for a long time.
